Rally Reviews

There and Back Again Summary

by Jason Smith

"There and Back Again" was the fourth event in the Finger Lakes Winter Rally series, although once again, snow was suspiciously absent. Most of the roads were dusty and graded with stone, which proved to be almost as challenging as the illusive "white stuff".

Peter Steinberg was rallymaster of the event and did a spectacular job at making sure it went off without a hitch. Our start point was at MacGregor's of Perinton, with about twelve miles to the OMP. The OMP was also the first free zone of the rally. Did someone say free zone? Maybe the next time I see the Smith/Seeley team pulled over, I should take heed and find out what the heck is going on! Oops...our Subaru crossed the line a touch early and maxed on points. Of course, because we were now "self-seeded" with A-Speed cars, we got some interesting looks at checkpoints. The scenario usually went like this:

Course Worker: "Car number?"
Me: "Twelve."
Course Worker: "Twelve?!?!?!? But how……?"
Me: "Don't ask."

Now that we were up front, we got to see some incredible "take-offs" and driving skill exhibited by the Laitenberger/MacArthur, Kerwin/Kraus, and Perry/Flory teams. Although the roads were mostly dry, there were still some very challenging sections. After Checkpoint 2, we headed down a zig-zag of a road that had our car breathing pretty hard……as well as most of the occupants inside! Towards the bottom was a hard right-hander that necessitated a quick three-point turn. I was thanking the "powers that be" at that point for dry conditions! Some of the rallyists saw quite a bit of wildlife, but except for the occasional dog or two (or maybe it was a flashback to Sno*Flake!), it was mostly critter-free. Although we didn't manage to come across any, the Smith/Seeley team encountered not one, not two, but FIVE deer in their path. Thankfully Alan was able to maneuver around them successfully and they continued without incident.

Late apologies must go to the gentleman walking his dog up Esperanza Road. I can only imagine his surprise as we came tooling up the hill at a fairly good clip with lights blazing. Imagine MY surprise when shortly thereafter the road suddenly leapt to the left, leaving our Subaru pointed towards a rather menacing ditch! Hoping to stay on course, I aimed left and chased after the road….but in the end we still had an "off". Hey, do we get style points for going in sideways? We managed to drive out and took a peek at the damage. We still had four wheels and they were all touching the ground, so it was "GO! GO! GO!". Further inspection at the break revealed just minor cosmetic damage.

One of our competitors wasn't so lucky, however. One of the many Volkswagens competing had to drop out early after their headlight relay went South. I would have to hazard a guess that night TSD rallies get VERY interesting VERY quickly without lights of any kind! They made it back home using a high-powered handheld spotlight to find their way and hopefully should be back running for the final series event.

All in all, it was another excellent rally in the Winter Challenge series. Many kudos to the checkpoint workers and organizers for all their hard work. The Perry/Flory team ran Limited and posted some incredible numbers, with a 20 point total over 13 checkpoints. First place in Equipped went to the Laitenberger/McArthur team in Bill's fearsome Turbo Legacy with 29 points amassed. Scoring only 97 points, the Mis/Rose contingency nabbed first place in Stock. Running Novice in a Toyota 4x4, Mary DelRusso and Heather Mann scored just 229 points, clinching first place and showing up quite a few of the Stock teams!

Hope to see you at the next event!
