Ohio veteran road rallyists win Relay for Life event
Tioga County ACS gains more than $700 during STPR weekend
WELLSBORO, Penn. (June 5, 2009) — Jon and Greg Lester, from Akron, Ohio, son and father respectively, drove their 1986 Audi 4000 to a virtually error-free victory to capture the 2009 Relay for Life charity rally last weekend with only five points, only one point from a perfect score.
Competing in the Equipped class, complete with a competition rally clock, and guided by navigator Greg Lester, who has won the event multiple times in the past, Jon scored a 40-point win over the next overall finisher, Alvin Fong and William Buck, from Danbury, Conn. Fong and Buck won the Stock class. Novice class winners were Darrie and Brandon Mase, of Liberty, Penn.
This year’s event benefitted the Tioga Country chapter of the American Cancer Society, and raised more than $700 from the 16 teams entered in the event.
The time-speed-distance rally was designed for any legal vehicle, within the legal speed limit, on high quality paved and unpaved roads in Tioga County. This event did not use the forest roads of the STPR Performance Rally. The instructions had a mileage to each turn, and were intended to be easy to follow. There were no tricks or traps involved in following the course. Awards were made in four classes: Novice (less than six (6) rallies by anyone in the car); Stock (stock odometer & single memory calculator); Limited (any equipment which cannot accumulate time and distance simultaneously, including non-programmable calculator, relocated odometer, SCCA class "L" equipment; and Equipped (anything goes). Door prizes were also awarded.
The 2009 Relay for Life Charity rally was scored and sanctioned by the Finger Lakes Region of the Sports Car Club of America.
